Aquarius New Moon+Solar Eclipse: backwards or forwards?

[New Moon+Solar Eclipse @ on Wednesday, February 6 @ 10:45 pm est]

On this Solar Eclipse and New Moon in Aquarius that is also Ash Wednesday, the Chinese Lunar New Year of the industrious Rat, and the day after Fat and Super Tuesday, the question is: are you going backwards or forwards? Because you can’t stay here.

The seed is planted. How it grows depends on your focus. If you KNOW it will grow, your focus is on growing. If you’re not sure, your focus is not strong and it may not grow.

How do we maintain our focus? Especially with SO MUCH information at our fingertips?

The Solar Eclipse is conjunct Mercury (and in the Mercury decanate of Aquarius), so there is a focus on new ideas and communication. Yet, due to the Eclipse, actually connecting can be cut off before it begins. You may want to communicate, but there are just too many things going on to maintain the focus.

Aquarius is a thinking sign that is more abstract than practical. We can care about what happens to society, but it can be difficult to feel for individuals. During Aquarius, we can be more excited about sharing information than acquiring more things. In fact, Aquarius prefers that you streamline your lifestyle. Aquarius remembers that all that stuff needs maintenance, which leads to more stuff.

Backwards OR forwards can be an appropriate response at time of transition. Aquarius is the sign of change and there is a stellium (3 planets of more) in Aquarius — Chiron, Mercury, Sun, Moon, Neptune, Vesta, and North Node). Mercury is Retrograde in Aquarius and conjunct the New Moon/Eclipse– AND — and this is the key to unlock the potential of the Eclipse — the Sun-Moon-Mercury conjunction is at the Venus-Uranus midpoint (Venus and Uranus are also sextile!) AND Uranus rules the Aquarius Solar Eclipse. This Eclipse can be a wide-open window of intuition — if you’re open to love and not shut down by fear and suspicion. It’s time to re-connect with the Age of Aquarius. It’s not just a song from the 60s, it’s a transition we are living through right now as we slowly move from the age of Pisces into Aquarius.

Yet transitions are transitions because they are periods of time when going back no longer works, but the future is not clear either. So you keep going back and forth until a path becomes more clear. Yet, it is by accepting this unclear period of unknown possibilities that we can be open to change, make unexpected progress, and wind up manifesting even more than our wildest imagination could have dreamed for us!

From the Sun’s perspective (Heliocentric astrology), there are no retrogrades. Retrogrades are optical illusions from the Earth’s perspective. Only the planets make retrograde stations, the Sun and the Moon are never retrograde. And on a soul, or solar level, there is no going backwards. Despite the labeling or judgments of society, you are always progressing towards your highest spiritual evolution. Even if– from the perspective of others on Earth, you seem to be going backwards. And at this Aquarius Eclipse, it is time for the entire society to start moving forward.

Since the Solar Eclipse in Aquarius is conjunct Mercury Retrograde, and the Eclipse is in the Mercury-ruled decanate of Aquarius (the Gemini decanate of Aquarius, degrees 10-20), this is an opportunity to change the way you think. If we become what we think, this Solar Eclipse contains the potential to become more aware of how we think so we can change the way we think and thereby the way we experience life. As we start to appreciate our Selves and the gifts we are here to learn and share, we can become fulfilled and functional contributors to the greater social network.

Aquarius is the sign of groups. Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius is the time to take another look at group dynamics. How do you participate? Do you show up? Do you share? Do you listen? Do others listen to you? Is the information you’re sharing true, caring, kind, necessary? Many of us get stressed listening to different opinions and insert our opinions at every opportunity. Are you constantly trying to get your plug in, or are you really listening and responding to what the others are saying? Not listening is a way to (attempt to) control others and assert your own ego. It’s really from the fear that you will be overtaken if you listen. Or that you will be drained, so you keep talking to prevent others from getting a word in. Yet, this makes working in a group situation into a constant conflict instead of an opportunity to find mutual solutions to large-scale problems.

The connection of Venus-Uranus to the Sun-Moon-Mercury conjunction highlights the theme of compassionate detachment. Caring but not clinging. The feeling we need to fix each other leads to attachment, judgment, and remaining stuck. What if you could care, yet maintain a healthy boundary between you and your friends? This Solar Eclipse/New Moon shows a strong connection between friends and security. Friends and group participation can give us a feeling of security. Sometimes, trying to step in and fix “it” denies the other person access to their own inner resources. So you spend you time feeling overwhelmed by their dilemmas, while they continue to have their ongoing dilemmas and every perspective or solution you offer is wrong. Since you can’t force others to change or feel good, all that really matters is that you feel clear.

What can you DO to create change. First in your own life. Then in the community. This Eclipse is an opportunity to walk into the future. Instead of remaining fixed in the past– take a plunge into NOW. How can you join with others to create a spiritual awakening? This Eclipse is a call to take notice of the Earth– as a group. We may need to sacrifice some material luxury for the well-being of our planet. And this can be a deal breaker for many of us who think we can only take because we don’t realize the valuable gifts we have to share. So on this Eclipse, it is uncertain which direction we will pick, old and seemingly safe. Or the new paradigm and uncertainty as we forge a new group spirituality. Surely an appropriate question for Aquarius.
