Happy Mother’s Day + First Quarter Moon

astrology chart for first quarter moon may 11, 2008

On Mother’s Day, the Moon, which represents MOTHER in astrology, is in Leo and prominent in the chart.

There is a First Quarter Moon, which occurs when the Sun and Moon are square, or 90 degrees apart. At the time of the Quarter Moon, the Moon is at 21 Leo 48, the Sun at 21 Taurus 48. This is a Taurus-Leo First Quarter Moon.

And that’s not all that’s at 21 degrees of the signs.

Uranus is at 21 Pisces 50 and Jupiter is at 22 Capricorn 21 and moving Retrograde, towards 21 degrees.

So at the First Quarter Moon, the Sun squares the Moon AND the Moon is at the focal point of a yod, quincunx Jupiter and Uranus, which are approaching a sextile (exact on May 21).

How much is too much? During a Taurus-Leo Quarter Moon, nothing is too much. Lovely things can make you feel proud and adored. Yet, in the current economic climate, your practical side may be at odds with your love of luxury, which can feel the need to be indulged a bit, at least today, on Mother’s Day! Yet, breaking your budget on bling is a choice that can effect your bank account and your self-esteem.

While you may be busy and social, there can be a part of you that feels sensitive and judged unfairly. And since you may not be willing to share how you feel readily, it can also be harder for you to know how you feel as you keep your feelings strictly private.

And since this Moon is in Leo, a fixed sign, you may be too proud to share and explore your feelings, which can take the fire out of relating and make you feel smothered instead of mothered (or you can smother instead of mother).

Today can bring up what makes it hard for you to show and share your love, whatever makes it hard for you to feel close to others. And while this can seem harsh on Mother’s Day, it can also serve to unblock whatever is preventing you from feeling nurtured by social interactions, and sometimes by the ones you love.

Past limitations can be seen through as what you needed in another time of your life to feel safe and secure, and from that perspective, you can let them go. A barrier that you may have previously assumed would last lifetimes, can change in a heartbeat or less. A stronger YOU can do wonders to help others who could use your guidance and care.

At the bass of today’s Yod to the Moon is the approaching Jupiter-Uranus sextile (this is the 2nd pass, the first was on March 28, this one is May 21, the last is November 13). This is a time of growing conscious awareness that is taking place on a global level, and will get a big boost of energy in November. Our associations with large groups can help the cause. As you lend your talents to help the group, you also receive opportunities and blessings in the form of lucky breaks, great press, and expanded intuition.

So send out that press release! Mercury may be stationing Rx and Jupiter is already Rx, yet Jupiter and Uranus are sextile and it’s a good time to add your insights into the mix.

The New in Taurus on Monday, May 5

Every New Moon is a time for new beginnings. The Taurus New Moon comes at planting time, making it the true seed time for the entire year. This is the time to sow your seeds, in the Earth and in people and projects you hope will bear fruit.

If you’ve been following these newsletters or astrology in general, you may remember that the day after Spring Equinox there was a Full Moon in at 1 degree Libra-Aries. The start of all the Cardinal signs - Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn — are gateways or points of action, called the Cardinal or Aries point in astrology. This New Moon again activates the Aries point. It may NOT seem obvious that 15 degrees of Taurus has anything in common an Aries Point, yet 15 degrees of the FIXED signs (and 7.5 of the Mutable) is equal to 0 degree of Cardinal Signs (using the 45 degree chart or the 8th harmonic). And this connection is further supported by the sesquisquare of the Sun and Moon to Pluto at 0 Capricorn, an Aries Point. Any planet conjunct an Aries or Cardinal Point promises active manifestation. And in Taurus, this promises to be an actively manifesting New Moon.

So what will manifest and how do we plant seeds that will manifest what we want?

We take the bull by the horns.

Taurus, symbolized by the Bull, is about self-worth. By taking the bull by the horns, we take control of our self-worth. The Bull represents Taurus because bulls are strong and stubborn, just the energy needed to build anything real and lasting. And while the fixed quality of Taurus can focus all our energy on amassing more things to make us feel more secure, there is more to Taurus than getting more stuff. The Bull plows the land, literally building the Earth for planting, growth, and eventually harvest. How can we plan and build our own lives for an abundant harvest?

In our modern culture, “the bull” are the stories we tell, the excuses about why we can’t do this or that, how we’re not good enough, or that we’re really better than everyone, if only we had the chance to show it. These stories reveal the true state of our self-worth. Our inner negativity that pops up, telling us to stop, slow down, or just quit.

Taurus is usually thought of as money and things. But it’s really about values, starting with self-worth. As a culture, we equate Taurus with money because money is something most of us agree to value. What do you value? To attract the things you want, you have to start by valuing yourself. How much do you value your Self? In Taurus, we can learn to appreciate ourselves and treat ourselves like gold.

What stops us from thinking of ourselves and treating ourselves like we are worthy? And how does that effect our wealth on every level, including our bank accounts?

At the New Moon, the Sun and Moon are sesquisquare Pluto. [Sesquisquare or sesquiquadrate is 135 degrees, a degree of manifestation, like an 1/8th note; Further, Pluto is at 0 Capricorn which is sesquisquare the Sun and Moon. This puts the Sun, Moon, and Pluto at the Aries point or Cardinal (they are conjunct in the 8th harmonic chart).] This brings hidden emotional issues into play. Power plays can be unconscious and emotionally driven. Underlying attitudes can be brought to the surface. But– instead of it being an opportunity to get angry and give someone a piece of your mind, this can be an opportunity to get beyond issues motivated by ego competition and allow yourself to trust. What if the goal isn’t to be right or win all, but to find a way to live and work productively together?

We don’t have to keep believing the same stories about ourselves, accepting the same excuses for why our lives never change, why we don’t share the gifts we KNOW we have inside. The fears that come up and tell us “we’re not all that” keep many of us from doing anything besides the essentials. What if we did something and made a mistake? Can we can still love and accept ourselves? Can you truly say you have never made a mistake? The truth is, we all make mistakes. Yet, it’s hard to admit, especially if we’re shamed-based. Do you really believe you are just nothing much and that’s all you have to look forward to? That’s a belief that can keep you sabotaging every effort you make to change– and automatically spreading negativity to anyone who tries to share, including close friends and family.

But what if our sabotaging acts are just a process to make ourselves better in every way.

Why do we feel the need to sabotage and self-limit?

Perhaps we have inner conflicts we need to heal before we can feel good about ourselves and ready to share. Yet, keeping all your talent and potential inside because there’s a chance you can make a mistake or not know enough, keeps you stuck, and feeling bad, negative, dis-eased. To grow, we need to share our energy, to put what’s inside “out there”. Keeping it all inside because of what you think you’re supposed to believe about yourself, can not only prevent you from reaching your personal and professional potential, it can prevent you from accessing your own most helpful resource, your own inner source of intuition and creativity. And this dis-connect breeds negativity, resentment, hatred.

The New Moon is in Earth-sign Taurus. While the Grand Trines are separating, Saturn and Pluto are still trine in Earth signs. This is a time of structure. Of working within a structure. Every day you need to find a way to love yourself. What you hate prevents you from loving, and you can only stop hating by staying focused on the love and sharing. And that needs to be something you can do daily because practice makes everything more familiar and comfortable. Complaining and commiserating with friends can be a release. But it may not change your life. Even if it seems to make you a little less stressed in the short-run, Taurus is about the long-run.

Last Quarter Moon on Monday April 28, 2008

On Monday, April 28, 2008, there is a Last Quarter Moon. The Moon is in Aquarius. The Sun is in Taurus. This is an Aquarius-Taurus square.

This is the chart for the Last Quarter Moon of April 28, 2008. Sun in Taurus, Moon in Aquarius as it wanes (approaching a conjunction with the Sun, or New Moon on May 5).

When you’re resourceful, you can manifest quickly now. This Last Quarter Moon occurs between 2 Earth Grand Trines that include planets in Taurus (also Virgo and Capricorn).

This Quarter Moon is both practical AND social-minded. Taurus-Aquarius cares about the welfare of people. And it needs to see a bottom line that can sustain its efforts. All give and no give back is not sustainable. If your needs are not met, how can you respond when there are social issues you feel are important to address? If you can’t take care of your financial needs, you become part of the problem, another person who needs help from society.

To be effective in either creating change or just being yourself, you need to be clear with yourself first. You can care for and truly support others. But this Quarter Moon reminds us– we all have to cover our bottom line.
